How Do You Get to Beppu from Oita Airport and by Train?
This guide is for visitors who plan to reach Beppu, the hot spring city on the east coast of Kyushu, and who want to know how the airport bus and the trains fit together. It covers the express bus from Oita Airport, the nearest rail station to the airport, and the English information centers in the city.
We used the airport's own bus page, the bus company's airport page, Beppu City's English tourism site and JR Kyushu's English site. All pages were read on 2026-10-04. We name no hotels or restaurants. Times and fares can change, so check the operator's page before you travel.
Where Beppu is
Beppu City's official tourism site, Beppu Tabi, calls Beppu a hot spring town with eight hot spring areas inside one small city. It says steam can be seen rising from many places. Our guide to the eight areas, the hells and steamed food describes them.
The tourism site has an access map page. Its headings group the routes by where you start: the Kanto area, Osaka, Hyogo, Shikoku, Aichi, Fukuoka and Kumamoto. For Kanto, Osaka, Hyogo and Aichi it lists air or rail routes, and for Osaka, Hyogo and Shikoku it lists ferries. The route details on that page are drawn as maps, so we could not read times or fares from it. Use the page itself for the route that fits you.
From Oita Airport by bus
Oita Airport's page says the nearest rail station is Kitsuki on the JR Nippo Line, about 30 minutes by car. That is far from Beppu, so most visitors take the airport express bus instead. The airport page says the bus is the Oita Kotsu Airliner, which the company's page also lists as the Oita and Beppu line.
The airport page says there is a bus information desk in the arrivals lobby. It says you buy a ticket from the machine beside the desk or at the boarding point, and that only the machine beside the desk takes credit cards. It also says no reservation is needed and that you board in the order you arrive. On the bus, it says, transport IC cards can be used, though discount fares are not supported.
The page lists two Beppu lines. Line K runs toward Oita and Beppu, and line B ends at JR Beppu Station. The times below are the page's approximate travel times from the airport.
- Kitsuki IC: 19 minutes, 900 yen one way.
- Hiji: 27 minutes, 1,300 yen.
- Grand Mercure Beppu Bay stop: 33 minutes, 1,600 yen. The page says this stop is for getting off only on trips from the airport.
- Kamegawa (Furuichi): 35 minutes.
- Beppu Kitahama: 47 minutes on line K and 50 minutes on line B.
- JR Beppu Station: 53 minutes on line B.
The page prints fares only for the first three stops in this list, and the cells for the Beppu stops appear merged in the text we read. We therefore do not quote a fare to Beppu Station. Check the operator's fare table before you go.
Children are charged half the adult fare from elementary school age. The page says one child aged one to under six rides free with each adult. It also warns that departure times can shift when a flight arrives late. It adds that traffic can delay the bus on the way to the airport, so allow extra time for a flight home.
By train
JR Kyushu's English site sells a rail pass for its network and has an online booking page. We did not check which lines the pass covers or what it costs, so we do not give a price or a route. The tourism site's access map lists JR routes to Beppu from the Kanto, Osaka, Hyogo, Aichi, Fukuoka and Kumamoto areas.
Help at Beppu Station
Beppu Tabi lists three tourist information centers. One is at JR Beppu Station, in the south building opposite the east exit, a one-minute walk from the exit. It says opening hours are 08:45 to 18:00 every day and that hours may change at the year-end and New Year holidays.
The same page says this center offers information in several languages, currency exchange, baggage storage and barrier-free information. A second center is in Kannawa, the steam town in the north of the city, and its stated hours are 09:00 to 17:00. A third center, for barrier-free travel, is on the first floor of JR Beppu Station and is closed on Sundays.
What we could not verify, and therefore left out
- Fares to Beppu Station and Beppu Kitahama, and the airport bus timetable for your date.
- Train times, train fares and what the JR Kyushu rail pass covers.
- Ferry timetables and fares from Osaka, Kobe or Shikoku.
- Taxi fares from the airport and the cost of a rental car.
